What is Craniosacral Therapy ? Craniosacral therapy was pioneered by an Osteopath. He felt the rhythm of the cerebral spinal fluid within his patients and noticed that this natural tide could be used to help relieve certain conditions. Free flow of cerebral spinal fluid helps to strengthen the immune system, remove congestion and aids relaxation. Craniosacral Therapy also works with connective tissue to release tension and unwind areas that have been subject to trauma. Connective tissue connects areas so it is possible to work distantly from areas that are sensitive. It works at a different layer to Osteopathy or Remedial Massage so may help conditions that have been unresponsive to treatment.
What is involved in a treatment ? There will be an initial consultation taking a medical history as well as information about current problems. The treatment is received generally lying fully clothed on a cotton futon at floor level on your back, this can be supported with cushions if needed. The therapist will make gentle contact with your body and tune in to the rhythm of the cerebral spinal fluid, looking for areas of tension and imbalance. The head is an important area for treatment but the whole body may be contacted.
Each session lasts an hour (babies and children may be shorter) including the consultation.
Who Can Benefit ? Craniosacral Therapy treats stresses, strains and trauma whether they are physical or emotional. It is used to treat all age ranges from newborns (birth trauma and colic) to the elderly. Trapped nerves - RSI, Bell’s Palsy, back pain and sprains are often treated as well as learning difficulties and emotional problems.
